This CPA NextGen curated ‘Smart City’ seminar was attended by almost 100 CPA NextGen members and stakeholders. Hosted by British Land and Gardiner & Theobald, the seminar explored the various ways that open data and new technologies are transforming how new commercial buildings are created and used.
David Elsmore (Partner at Gardiner & Theobald) opened the event with a presentation assessing the “what”, the “how” and the “why” of smart buildings. A panel discussion moderated by CPA NextGen Steering Group Chair, Paula Gonzalez (Associate at John Robertson Architects) followed, were topics such as improving user experience and the environmental benefits of smart buildings were debated.

Panellists included Julian Barker (Head of Smart Places at British Land) who discussed his experiences as a landlord and the various ways he incorporates and encourages the use of ‘smart’ features in his buildings. Dr Na’amah Hagiladi (Senior Project Manager at the City of London Corporation) shared an insight into how the City of London is leading the way in delivering a ‘Gigabit City’, detailing how the City Corporation uses tech and data to manage the City’s public realm. Andrew Martin (Director of Real Estate & Construction at Google) discussed the unique experience of Google, as a large tech occupier, focusing on how best to create a seamless experience for workers and visitors by utilising tech and real time data.
